We know that there’s an
awful amount of tension in the air due to the upcoming election, but let’s take
a couple of minutes to enjoy shots of harmless failure, al thanks to Roborace.
The autonomous racing
league televised its season Beta 1.1 race last week, aiming to show off the
potential of high-speed auto races without a human driver or a driverless car. But things didn’t go
as planned for the driverless race car, courtesy SIT Acronis Autonomous.
Basically, there was an
initialization lap before the race just like regular high-speed auto races, where the car is guided by a human
instructor or follows a driver-guide towards the start line. This is where things went wrong, as
explained by the engineer behind the self-driving speedster. For some strange
reason, the steering mechanism got locked, so when the race began, the car
started taking a detour and went straight into a barrier present at the side of
the track.
This was an extremely
rare event so if you thought you’ll get to witness such an incident again,
you’ve missed it. But it was strangely satisfying to see an impressive machine
wreck itself in public ignoring better judgment
altogether.
