If you are wondering why #RIPTwitter has been trending since last night, it’s because the platform has given in to pop culture. Yes, just like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp, Twitter is also going to have ephemeral stories that will disappear after 24 hours.

Right now, they are testing this feature in Brazil, and it is known as “fleets” (because of its fleeting nature, get it?)

The spokesperson for Twitter says that the decision is taken because many users voiced their concerns regarding the permanent nature of some public tweets. So the fleets cannot be liked, and if you reply, it will go straight to the inbox and turn it into a conversation. In brief, no public drama anymore!

Even though Twitter says it has introduced this feature for the convenience of users, they did not appear quite happy, and this is why #RIPTwitter is trending. “If we wanted stories, we’d just use the other platforms,” was the general response. Many people also pointed out the lack of an edit button on Twitter and said that they should have instead done something about that.

It wouldn’t be long before “fleets” are allowed worldwide, and we are still not sure what purpose they would serve. Until then, here are some tweets to enjoy.
