The Gay Community Reclaim #ProudBoys and It’s Beautiful!

The month of October is
truly turning out to be that member of the group who does all the work. Almost
every day of this month we’ve woken up to positive news like Trump getting
Coronavirus right before the elections or Harvey Weinstein getting charged with
six additional sexual assault allegations right before his LA trial on sex
crimes – the timing couldn’t be more perfect!

In addition to all
these wonderful news, the gay community is also beautifully reclaiming the #ProudBoys
hashtag! This Sunday, the hashtag trended on Twitter once again and for all the
right reasons. The gay community decided to redefine the term “proud boys” and filled our timelines
with love, acceptance, positivity, and peace.

By Sunday afternoon,
the hashtag was already tweeted 342,000 times. The content included wonderful
memories from pride parades, photos of men kissing, and heartwarming odes to
romantic partners. This was a unique and admirable way to remove the
negativity that was previously associated with the hashtag by the far-right. Honestly,
it changed the way we perceived hatred, teaching us that it’s only as relevant
as you make it out to be – don’t pay attention and you take the agency from
them entirely!

At this year’s
presidential debate, moderator Chris Wallace asked Trump if he was willing to
condemn the white supremacist and militia groups, and
instead of instantly denouncing it, Trump said, “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by. But I’ll tell you what, somebody’s
got to do something about Antifa and the left.”

This was an
unbelievably despicable reaction and that too, from the President of the United
States! No matter how insignificant it may seem at first, but by hijacking the
hashtag, people are making it clear that hate and discrimination will no longer
be tolerated.
