The police have started to exercise brutal control on the protestors that have come out to demand justice for George Floyd. Famous personalities have joined the protests and along with other people, they are also getting arrested or receiving threats due to their participation.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's daughter was arrested on Saturday night. Chiara de Blasio was charged with unlawful assembly but she was later released by the police.
Mayor de Blasio has still not commented on the matter.
Saturday morning began with peaceful protests in New York with many protestors leaning on one knee in front of the police officers to signify the murder of George Floyd, who was choked to death by a cop. However, as evening approached, the protests took a violent turn, and people started burning cars. The police said that some objects were also thrown at them.
Before his daughter’s arrest, Mayor de Blasio voiced his concerns about George Floyd’s murder and said that “structural racism haunts the lives of people of color.”
“What we're seeing is an overflow due to decades of injustices,” de Blasio tweeted. “I see my own privilege and can only understand so much. I know enough to say that for the Black community every day is pervaded by racism. We will do better.”
