Well, this is awkward!
We know it’s hard to differentiate between original AirPods and the several look-alike earbuds, but checking the box is nevertheless a good idea to figure out! But poor CBP officers don’t even know that…
US Customs and Border Protection announced on twitter that its officers managed to seize around 2000 counterfeit Apple AirPods right from Hong Kong. These products are valued at around $398K had they been genuine. They also released a statement on this situation, which commended CBP officers for shielding the American public from uncountable dangers regularly and said that the interception of counterfeit earbuds is indeed a direct reflection of the commitment to mission and vigilance success by our CBP officers daily.
Well, that’s awkward because according to the agency’s captured photos, all these seized products seem to be genuine OnePlus Buds, packed and transported in a box that says just the same. But CBP pompously tweeted that it is not Apple as if they detected a huge forged piece in renaissance art.
We cannot say that all of the 2,000 seized units were OnePlus Buds, but the pictures posted by CP indicates that some of them were original. According to the press release, the units were transported to Nevada from Hong Kong and seized on August 31st at JFK.
If they all turn out to be OnePlus Buds then no doubt CBP’s math is quite weak: at $79 each, all 2,000 of them would be worth $158,000.
The fact that a lot of people would confuse the white Oneplus Buds with AirPods, it’s understandably a common misunderstanding! But going out public with it, it’s quite embarrassing that’s for sure. Though, we don’t really know what really led the CBP’s officers to seize these units, they should have at least checked them thoroughly before making any statements.
It’s surely an embarrassing blunder by CBP officers or a wakeup call for airbuds producers to be a little more original! Or at least they should change the color to make it more distinctive with others, no?
