Even though we still
have a lot to learn, America is finally bidding goodbye to all its problematic
history by not just accepting the flaws but also showing exactly what we feel
about them.
The protestors have
vowed to remove all Confederate monuments and many people were constantly
pointing towards the statue of Christopher Columbus, the man who drew away the
Indians living in America and then brutally colonized their homeland. He is
guilty of mass genocide and extreme racism because he took over the land of
indigenous people by either killing them or employing them as slaves. So with
everything going on in the world, it is only natural that you hate his
monument.
However, some Italian
Americans did not want their favorite explorer to face any vandalism because,
in their opinion, he represents something bigger. Of course, if you look past
the trauma of thousands of indigenous tribes who are still not allowed to call
America their home, we are sure you might find something positive about
Columbus.
New York Governor
Andrew Cuomo defended his statue saying, “The Christopher Columbus statue in
some way represents the Italian American legacy in this country and the Italian
American contribution in this country.”
The fact that Columbus’
initial plan was not even close to discovering the present United States
because he did not arrive on this land does nothing to make Cuomo and other
Italian Americans question their history.
So, people on Twitter
came up with interesting replacements for the statue and things got a little
out of hand.
