Malcolm & Marie is a movie that will make you feel like a friend sitting in a backseat of car, while a toxic couple argues in the front.
Shot during the pandemic, the movie is a “two-handler” which means that it features only two characters Malcolm and Marie, played by John David Washington and Zendaya respectively.
Written and directed by Sam Levinson, the movie features a quarrelling couple who tears each other apart (both physically, and figuratively) over the course of one long and dark night…
At one point, the movie seems like an awfully long sequel from Scarlett Johansson’s Marriage Story.
The movie opens with a couple returning to their home after a premier of Malcolm’s directorial debut film. He is full of energy, while Marie is tight-lipped. Malcolm finally realizes that something is really bothering her and ask to share, and this is how their feature-length argument starts…
The early reactions are strong for this black-and-white melodrama; some are praising the Zendaya and John David’s strong performances while others are expressing their disappointments with the movie’s screenplay – deeming it to be highly “disturbing”.
