Netflix’s latest title is a coming of age movie about the relationship between a father and son. A family drama that is placed in an urban setting, Concrete Cowboy is helmed by first-time director, Ricky Staub, and it’s insane to see how he managed to bring together such an incredible cast.
It has Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin, Moonlight’s Jharrel Jerome, and the incomparable Idris Elba. The family lives in the heart of Philadelphia and is inspired by real life events.
The story is simple yet empowering. Cole (McLaughlin) has gotten expelled from school after getting into yet another fight – his mother picks him up and drops him off to his father’s stoop. The father, played by Idris, is still living his bachelor days and has a horse, so the entire place smells like hay.
The fridge has nothing edible but some beers and soda to go. Basically, the kid is now out of his comfort zone, as the place doesn’t seem like the kind of place people should be living in – let alone with animals.
Alba, of course, is your go-to charismatic guy who finds several key moments to tutor his son about life. The entire scenery seems authentic with no artificial elements to cover true beauty.
Look, the movie was a bit clichéd, we can’t lie, but it had some rich moments that offer metaphorical value. Dan Walser co-wrote the movie with Straub, and it seems like a good partnership, as everything blended smoothly.
The movie shows us an all-rounded picture – there are several triumphs and failures and there are also moments to laugh and moment to cry over. The script seems a bit dragged at the end, but it’s your usual slice of life dramedy that will hold everything together in the climax. The characters are warm and relatable, and they seem genuine and rooted to the crux of the story (well played by Concrete Cowboy cast).

I’m SO hype! People don’t believe me when I tell them I grew up in West Philly right across the street from a horse stable.

What an unexpected gem. The cast, the story, the real-life riders, and Philly as the backdrop.
